National Headquarters Indianapolis, IN

The American Legion National HQ

The beautiful National Headquarters of The American Legion is one of several buildings and memorials that comprise the Indiana War Memorial Plaza, a five-block area of downtown Indianapolis, Indiana, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building features Indiana limestone and is considered one of the finest structures of its kind in the United States. The $2.5 million headquarters building is a gift from the people of Indiana. It is comprised of two, four-story pilastered wings joined by a recessed center section containing the entrance.

The American Legion Mall

The building is located at the northern end of a two block park, commonly referred to as "American Legion Mall." The Mall features a sunken garden with a cenotaph and four Art Deco columns topped with stylized gold eagles. The cenotaph is a tribute to men and women from Indiana who gave their lives in World War I. During the summer, a variety of community events are staged on American Legion Mall, taking advantage of the natural amphitheater landscape.

The American Legion National HQ

Located in the Indianapolis National Headquarters building are the offices of the National Commander, National Adjutant, an executive director, the historical archives and library, finance operations, The American Legion Magazine and Dispatch editorial offices, as well as Membership & Internal Affairs, Americanism, Children and Youth, Convention, Public Relations, and Purchasing and Document Processing.

Washington DC Office

The American Legion Washington

The building has been on "K" Street in Washington -- three blocks from the White House -- since 1934. The original brownstone building was replaced in 1951 by a then-modern office building. The dedication of that new building took place on Aug. 14, 1951, with President Harry Truman presiding. Nearly four decades later, the building received a major renovation. It was rededicated on Feb. 25, 1990 by then-VA Secretary Edward Derwinski.

In addition to the National Headquarters building provided by the State of Indiana, The American Legion owns a building in Washington, D.C. Located in this building is an office for the National Commander to support frequent visits to the seat of government by the leader of the nation's largest veterans organization. Also located here are offices of an executive director, and operations for Legislative, Economics, National Security, Foreign Relations, Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, and Media Relations.
